Tie Guan Yin (濃香鐵觀音), Charcoal Style represents a rare and increasingly overlooked expression of this historic oolong. Deep charcoal baking, once the original style of Tie Guan Yin, has become uncommon over the past two decades, in part because traditional roasting methods often left a grassy character that could resurface months after roasting.

We return to this traditional profile through a scientific, modern approach. The tea is first roasted, then rested for six months, allowing the remaining enzymes to fully deactivate. Only then is a second, stronger charcoal roast applied to stabilise the leaf. This two-step process restores the integrity of the style while avoiding the harsh grassiness.

When brewed at high concentration and low temperature, the liquor is powerful yet composed, carrying a velvety texture and pronounced notes of roasted nuts and crispy rice, followed by a long, steady sweetness. Best enjoyed in small servings of 30–40 ml, this charcoal style Tie Guan Yin offers a compelling alternative for those who usually reach for black tea.
